Yoga I

In my Yoga I class we were asked to answer the following questions to show our overall understanding of "Life-long Wellness" and how we will apply it to our daily lives.

1. What did you learn about "Life-Long Wellness" from taking this General Education Class?

I learned the benefits of being well-rounded in your fitness routine. I need to find time to not only do aerobic  and strength workouts, but stretching and flexibility workouts as well. Yoga is a great workout for strength and flexibility. You have to really use your core strength to perform certain moves, and the moves are slow and steady which helps repair instead of tear muscles. Yoga is also a great way to center yourself and be peaceful and quite. It is a great time for reflection and meditation.

In class we also discussed the benefits of not only leading an active lifestyle day to day, but also eating right. We discussed the types of foods that are truly bad for you (white processed sugar, white potatoes, white bread. etc.) and what types of foods we need to be eating.

2. How will you apply this information to your life?

I am applying this information to my life by making sure I have a balanced workout routine that include aerobics, strength training, and yoga. I am also applying the principles I learned about eating right to my diet. I am not changing my diet completely all at once, but little by little so my body gets used to eating healthier and eventually only craves healthy things.

3. What is your intention to continue to practice and apply what you learned in this class to your life and why?

At the beginning of the semester I was told by my instructor that if I were to practice on more than one day throughout the week, I would find more benefits from my practice than by just doing it during class. So I made consistent efforts to schedule time to practice yoga at least 3 or 4 times a week. I was not always successful, but I did notice significant differences to my wakefulness in the morning and my energy throughout the day. Even after this class is done, I still plan to mix my practice of yoga with my other workouts. I have also tried to follow the advice given to me by my teacher about how to eat healthier.  I want to continue the healthier practices I have learned because I want to have a healthy balance in my life. I also have come to love the way Yoga makes me feel on a day to day basis.

4. What did you like most about this class?

I really liked being able to practice with other beginners like myself. I liked that the instructor didn't try to push us too quickly into positions we may not be able to do. I also like how she talked about getting to know our own bodies limits and not compete with ourselves. I loved the relaxed and accepting atmosphere that was provided for our discussions and practice. And lastly, I really like my teachers personality. She was open and honest, and surprisingly funny and laid back. I felt like she brought the perfect mood to each of our classes.
